Q4 2026 Game Industry Trends: What They Mean for Ports and Remakes

Our monthly report is back, and this time it covers the whole of Q4. Console prices went up, Switch 2 is filling up with ports, remasters now launch on five or six platforms at once and GTA VI is reshaping the end of the year. Here is what each trend means if you are planning a port or a remake.

Q4 2026 Game Industry Trends: What They Mean for Ports and Remakes

Welcome to another edition of our monthly report.

Every month we look at what is moving in the games industry and translate it into one practical question: what does this change for a studio or publisher planning a port, a remaster or a remake?

This time we are looking at the whole last quarter of 2026, because it is an unusual one. Hardware got more expensive, Nintendo Switch 2 is turning into the busiest port destination of the year, remasters are launching on almost every platform at once, and one very large game is about to land in the middle of November.

Quick facts: PS5 costs $649.99 in the US since April 2, 2026, Xbox Series X $799.99 since August 1 and Switch 2 $499.99 since September 1, mostly because of rising memory prices. As of June 30, 2026, PS5 had sold 95.3 million units, Switch 2 23.68 million and the original Switch 156.59 million. Q4 brings Switch 2 versions of games such as Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4, Stellar Blade, Metaphor: ReFantazio and Monster Hunter Wilds, plus remasters and remakes including Tales of Eternia Remastered, The Wolf Among Us Remastered and Rayman Legends Retold. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

1. Consoles got more expensive - and that makes the installed base more valuable

2026 has been the year of hardware price increases. The main driver is memory: AI data centers are buying up DRAM and storage, and console makers are paying for it.

  • PlayStation 5 went up by $100 in the US on April 2, 2026, to $649.99. The Digital Edition now costs $599.99 and PS5 Pro $899.99.
  • Xbox Series X rose to $799.99 on August 1, 2026, and Series S now starts at $499.99. Microsoft said memory and storage costs had more than doubled.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 went from $449.99 to $499.99 in the US on September 1, 2026 - its first price change since launch.
  • Valve's Steam Machine went on sale at the end of June starting at $1,049, roughly the cost of its components.

What it means for ports and remakes

When new hardware gets expensive, players stay longer with the consoles they already own. That shifts the value toward the installed base - and the installed base is already huge: 95.3 million PS5 consoles, 156.59 million original Switch consoles and 23.68 million Switch 2 consoles as of June 30, 2026.

For a game that already exists on PC, that is the simplest argument for a port: millions of players who are not going to buy new hardware this year, but are still buying games. If you have been waiting for "the next generation" before porting, the price increases are a reason to stop waiting. The audience is on current consoles, and it will stay there for a while.

2. Switch 2 is the port destination of the quarter

Look at the Q4 release calendar and one pattern jumps out: a long list of Switch 2 versions of games that already shipped elsewhere.

Between October and December, Switch 2 gets Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 (October 16), It Takes Two (October 15), Minecraft (October 27), Stellar Blade (November 6), Metaphor: ReFantazio (November 12), The Ascent Ultimate Edition (December 2) and Monster Hunter Wilds (December 4), among others.

What it means for ports and remakes

Publishers are treating Switch 2 as a second launch for existing catalogs, not just a platform for new releases. That is good news - it proves the hardware can carry demanding games - but it also means the Switch 2 storefront is getting crowded with big names.

For indie and AA teams, the takeaway is timing. The earlier a Switch 2 version arrives, the less it has to compete with the large back-catalog ports that are still on their way. And because the original Switch still has more than 156 million consoles out there, it is worth planning Switch 1 and Switch 2 together, rather than treating them as two separate projects. If you are weighing this up, our Nintendo Switch 2 porting page covers what the platform asks for.

3. Remakes and remasters are now a regular part of the release calendar

Q4 alone brings Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered (October 1), Tales of Eternia Remastered (October 16), The Wolf Among Us Remastered (October 29), a new The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 (November 5) and Rayman Legends Retold (December 3). Earlier this year, Halo: Campaign Evolved - a ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original Halo campaign - launched on July 28 on Xbox, PC and, for the first time for a mainline Halo campaign, PS5.

Two details stand out:

  • Remasters launch everywhere at once. Tales of Eternia Remastered ships on PS5, PS4, Xbox, PC, Switch and Switch 2. The Wolf Among Us Remastered ships on PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch and Switch 2. Day-one multi-platform is now the default, not the exception.
  • Platform exclusivity matters less than reach. A remake of one of Xbox's most important franchises launching on PlayStation on day one says a lot about where the business is going.

What it means for ports and remakes

An older game is an asset, not an archive. A remaster is often the cheapest way to bring a proven game back to market - and if it is going to launch on five or six platforms at once, the porting work has to be part of the plan from day one, not something added after the PC version is finished.

The real decision is scope: how much should change? We wrote about that separately in Remaster or remake?, and it is exactly the question our Remake & Remaster team starts with.

4. GTA VI lands on November 19 - plan around it

Take-Two has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It will absorb a huge share of players' time, creator coverage and storefront attention for weeks.

It also explains the shape of the quarter: October is packed - Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Final Fantasy Resonance and many of the ports and remasters above all land before GTA VI - while the weeks around November 19 are noticeably quieter.

What it means for ports and remakes

If your port or remaster is still dated for the second half of November, ask whether that date really helps you. For many smaller titles, early December or the first weeks of 2027 will give the game more room to be seen. And if you are planning a port for spring 2027, now is the moment to start the work - the same way we described in our September release calendar, the right window only helps if the build is ready for it.

What we are taking from Q4

TrendWhat changedWhat it means for you
Hardware pricesPS5, Xbox and Switch 2 all got more expensive in 2026Port to the consoles players already own
Switch 2 portsBig catalogs are arriving on Switch 2 in Q4Go early, and plan Switch 1 and 2 together

The common thread is simple: the market rewards games that are already finished and can reach more platforms quickly. That is exactly what Lynci was built for - and with fixed-price porting for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, WinGDK and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, you know the cost before the work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did console prices go up in 2026?

Mostly because of memory. AI data centers are buying a large share of the world's DRAM and storage, which has pushed component costs up. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all raised console prices in 2026, and Microsoft said its memory and storage costs had more than doubled.

Is it still worth porting a game to Nintendo Switch 2?

Yes. Switch 2 had sold 23.68 million units by June 30, 2026, and many major publishers are bringing their catalogs to it in Q4. The platform is getting more crowded, so an earlier release and a plan that covers Switch 1 and Switch 2 together make the strongest case.

When does GTA VI come out?

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Should a remaster launch on all platforms at once?

More and more remasters do. Tales of Eternia Remastered and The Wolf Among Us Remastered both launch on five or more platforms on day one. That only works if the porting work is planned together with the remaster itself.
